What is the Experience in a Tample Lodging
Some people may find it incrediby appealing to stay in a temple which is located in and around exquisite Japanese gardens and temples.

Firstly, you should get to know the matters needing attention. There is little English spoken in temples and it is best if you know basic Japanese etiquette, such as eating with chopsticks, sitting on the floor, and bowing when and where appropriate.

There is not any room service, you have to make your own bed, you are expected to check in and out early, and some have set schedules for bathing and dinner. You are not obliged to attend the morning prayer, preformed at dawn, but it is good form to do so.

Most shukubo are not geared to mass tourism because they only have a few rooms. Sleeping on traditional tatami mats with only paper-wooden screens for privacy, lodgers can take contemplative morning walks through fiery Japanese maples before the hordes of day trippers arrive.

Kyoto Temple Lodging Reviews
"I went to Koya-san 2 years ago and it was absolutely amazing. We stayed at the Haryou-in. My only regret is not paying a bit more for some of the nicer temples in the area. The Haryou-in cost Y6500 (+81-736-56-2702) including 2 meals. Most other temples have fixed their prices at Y9000. Morning prayers were optional."
"Check out Shunkoin. It's a Zen Temple in the Northwest of Kyoto (in MyoshinJi complex, near RyoanJi) and the vice abbott speaks excellent English. I stayed there for 5 nights in September and it was amazing. No meditation required and no curfew. 1 minute walk to bus or 8 minute walk to Hanazono (Japan Rail) train station."
"Our one-night stay at Daishin-in was our favorite part of our 10 day trip in Tokyo and Kyoto. The Myoshin-ji complex and Daishin-in temple are beautiful and very peaceful. It was a great way to experience Japanese culture and also take time to relax. It was a really easy walk from Hanazono station."
"Our Japanese friends took us to Myoshinji Daishin-in, and it was a truly memorable stay. It is very Japanese, a little bit like a homestay, with futon on tatami and the shoji, the sliding doors. It is very quiet, romantic and spirituel. Take a taxi to get there, and don't miss to walk around the whole temple complex."
