From a traditional Chinese fishing village to a laid-back multicultural community, Lamma’s blend of Western and Chinese island life creates an atmosphere that has proved irresistible for Hong Kong’s busy residents. Many come here as day-trippers; some stay for good. Here I strongly recommend these great places to you for having an adventure!
Hung Shing Yeh Beach
Hung Shing Yeh Beach’s clean water and powdery sand have been attracting expats and locals for a long time. It’s also a top spot to ring in yet another laid-back evening on the sand by throwing (or maybe even crashing) a party in the barbecue area, as the sunset’s rays reflect off the water.

Lamma Fisherfolk's Village
Like Hong Kong itself, Lamma Island’s roots are tied to the sea and to the people who’ve worked it, although its fishing industry is no longer as prominent as it once was. Lamma Fisherfolk’s Village gives you a chance to experience what life might have been like on the island when the industry thrived here. Under the directorship of a Lamma native and retired fisherman, the project preserves not only the traditional fishing methods of the island, but also of Hong Kong.
Visitors are also invited to try their hands at angling, catching large fish, hauling on fishing nets and weaving ropes.
Address:2/F, 20 Sok Kwu Wan First Street, Sok Kwu Wan, Lamma Island
How to get there
Ferry from Central Pier 4 to Sok Kwu Wan. It takes about 40 minutes. Walk for approximately three minutes to the ticket booth near the pier, where you can purchase a ticket for the shuttle boat that takes you to the village.

Tin Hau Temple at Yung Shue Wan
Tin Hau, Goddess of the Sea, is revered by fishermen and anyone whose life and destiny is tied to the sea. Temples that honour her are found in abundance in Chinese coastal communities throughout Asia. Hong Kong is no exception.
However, the Tin Hau Temple at Yung Shue Wan on Lamma Island has an interesting feature that sets it apart from most others in Hong Kong. Serious temple buffs will notice that the lions standing guard at its entrance are incongruously Western in appearance.
Apparently, when the temple’s original Chinese-style lions were damaged in 1960, the mason hired to replace them specialised in Western-style stone lions. The result is a fitting motif for the East-meets-West culture of Lamma Island.

Lamma Winds
If you have a fondness for green energy, you’ll want to check out wind power in action at Lamma Winds. Standing 71 metres tall, the 800 kW wind turbine is Hong Kong’s first and was built to provide a practical look at operating wind turbines. Tai Ling on Lamma Island was chosen for this installation because it’s one of the breeziest places in Hong Kong.
How to get there
Ferry from Central Pier 4 to Yung Shue Wan (the journey takes about 30 minutes). From Yung Shue Wan Ferry Pier, walk along Yung Shue Wan Main Street towards Hung Shing Yeh Beach for approximately 30 minutes. Turn left at the crossroads at Lamma Island Police Post and walk for around another 20 minutes.
